Editor's Review

The Brindavan Garden is a beautiful terrace garden amidst a scenic backdrop. The well laid-out garden has beautiful flowering plants and the overall design is impeccable. The musical fountain show is definitely the major highlight of the Brindavan Gardens. The only problem is that since the garden is very famous, it gets overcrowded during peak periods. The garden is very huge in size and therefore, you cannot expect it to be extremely well-maintained.

PROS

  • Many beautiful pictures can be taken.
  • The evening musical fountain show is wonderful.
  • Amazing variety of flowers.
  • Good food stalls inside.
  • Good facilities for boating.

CONS

  • Gets overcrowded, especially on weekends.
  • May get tiring if you have to cover the whole place.
  • Lacks the modern look.
  • You may find some litter around sometimes.
  • Far away from the city.

Detailed Info

Brindavan Gardens is one of the most beautiful terrace gardens in the world making it a must-visit tourist attraction in Mysore. The botanical garden has a wide variety of exotic flowering plants and ornamental trees. It also features sculptures of animals created by clipping shrubs, passages covered by creepers and gazebos. The illuminated fountains in the garden though, are its major attractions. The garden also has a lake with facilities for boating. The 60-acre garden is laid out in three terraces and ends in a horse-shoe shape. The symmetric design of the garden makes the overall look of the garden even more special.

Brindavan Gardens is built below the Krishnaraja Sagar Dam and across the Cauvery River. Under the direction of Sir Mirza Ismail who was the then diwan of Mysore, the department of Horticulture had begun its work on the garden in 1927 and the work was completed in 1932. The modelling of the Brindavan Gardens had a lot of influence from the famous Shalimar Gardens in Kashmir. The garden underwent a major renovation programme worth 50 million in 2005.

A small entry fee is charged for visitors. Although the garden is open from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM, the best time to visit the garden is during the spectacular musical fountain shows that take place from 6:30 PM. The show lasts for an hour on weekdays and two hours on weekends. Videography is prohibited in the Brindavan Gardens and a fine is charged on visitors for any unauthorised use of cameras
